How to study Functional Skills Level 1

Start with the skill area that needs the most development and complete one topic at a time. Read the explanation, attempt the activity independently and review any corrections carefully. Keep a record of unfamiliar vocabulary, useful sentence patterns and mistakes that you want to avoid in future work.

Reading practice develops comparison, inference and understanding of purpose and language features. Writing resources support planning, organisation, accuracy and appropriate formats. Speaking, listening and communication activities help learners contribute to discussions, deliver information clearly and respond effectively to other people.

Prepare for Level 1 assessments

Build accuracy before adding time limits. Read assessment instructions carefully, check how many responses are required and leave time to review your answers. Use the official Pearson Functional Skills English information for authoritative qualification and assessment guidance.

Regular short study sessions are effective. Choose a realistic weekly target, revisit difficult activities and use feedback from tutors or practice answers to measure progress. Select a skill area above to begin.
