ESOLish Tutor Guide
One class code. A simple start for everyone.
Learn how to create your class, share the code and follow your learners’ reading progress, step by step.
Free and optional: any tutor can register with a verified email address. Learners can practise without joining a class.
Open ESOLish Tutor Dashboard — register, sign in or manage your classes
For tutors
- Sign in. Tutors need a verified tutor account. Create your free tutor account once using your email address and the verification link sent to your inbox. Open your verification email while signed out of ESOLish, or use an InPrivate/incognito window if you are already signed in as an administrator. Choose your tutor password privately. Select Sign in securely and use your tutor email and password on the WordPress login screen. You will return to the tutor dashboard; a tutor account has no administrator privileges.
- Create a class. Enter a name such as “Entry 1 – Tuesday morning” and select Create class. Use a separate class for each teaching group.
- Share the code. Your new class opens automatically. Select Copy class code and share it with your learners. The code remains in your dashboard.
- View the results. Keep your class results sheet open. It updates every 10 seconds with submitted scores, attempt numbers, activities and completion dates. You can also download a CSV.
For learners
- Open the reading practice page and select Join my class.
- Enter your class code and first name or agreed alias. Confirm that you understand your tutor will receive your scores, then select Start class practice.
- Read, answer the questions and check your score. Your result saves automatically.
Three things to remember
- Use the same name each time. This keeps your attempts together. If two learners share a name, agree different aliases, such as “Amina A” and “Amina B”.
- Keep the class code within the group. Names are entered by learners and are not identity-verified. Anyone with the code could submit under a chosen name. Results are for practice.
- Clear your details on a shared device. Select Leave class / clear my details when finished. Reloading or closing the page also clears the joined session.
Quick help
Forgotten the class code? The tutor can copy the same code again from their dashboard.
Score not saved? Use Save result again if offered. Retrying a save does not create a duplicate attempt.
Finished teaching a group? Archive the class. Existing results stay available, and you can reopen it later.
Prefer untracked practice? Everyone can practise and check their scores without joining a class.
Optional class progress tracking
- Tutors verify an email address and sign in.
- Create a separate class for each teaching group.
- Share the class code. Learners join with that code and their first name or agreed alias. No roster entry, learner email or individual code is needed.
- Learners open the usual reading page, select Join my class, read and answer on the same page.
- Check answers shows the score immediately and saves one submitted attempt.
- Tutors view their own class results and download a CSV.
Everyone can still practise without entering details. Class tracking is optional.
Privacy and shared devices
Use first names or agreed aliases only and use the same name each time. Share the class code only with your class. Use a different alias for learners with the same name. Anyone with the class code can submit under a chosen name; these are practice records, not verified identities. Results contain the class, first name or alias, activity, score, attempt number, question correctness and completion time. Written answers are marked but are not stored. Results are retained for 365 days, then deleted automatically. Class records and first names or aliases remain until the tutor deletes them. Tutors can delete an individual learner and their results sooner. Tutors must explain tracking to their learners and follow their organisation’s requirements. Use Leave class before sharing a device; details are cleared when the tab closes. ESOLish site administrators can access stored information for support and administration. No results are emailed automatically.
