Practise Functional English expressions
These Functional English videos introduce short expressions you may hear in everyday conversations in Britain. Choose a video, listen to the phrase and notice the situation in which it is used. The resources are free to use at home or in an ESOL lesson.
Watch, listen and repeat
Watch once for the main idea. Play the video again and listen carefully to the pronunciation. Pause and repeat the expression aloud. Try to copy the rhythm, then say the phrase at a comfortable speed.
Try a short conversation
Practise with a partner. Think of a suitable situation and take turns using the expression. For example, invite someone for a coffee or respond when a friend thanks you. Many of these expressions are informal, so consider who you are speaking to.
Write new phrases in a notebook with a short example. Return to the videos to help you remember them. Teachers can use one clip as a lesson warm-up, a listening task or a prompt for pair work.
