Entry 1 reading practice for adult learners
Use these free activities to build confidence with English you meet in everyday life. This Entry 1 reading practice covers forms, emails, letters, notices, messages and short stories. The texts include useful situations at home, in a learning centre, at work and in the community. Each reading has six questions and explanations to help you understand your answers.
Choose a text and read carefully
Start with a topic that interests you. Read the title first and think about who the text is for. Then read the paragraphs or table slowly. Look for useful details such as names, places, dates, times and instructions. You can return to the text while answering, so there is no need to remember everything at once.
Practise different question types
Some questions ask you to choose an answer or decide whether a statement is true or false. Others ask you to match a number to a word or type a short answer. Check capital letters in names and days. For a word such as he, she, it or they, look at the sentence before it to find out who or what it refers to.
Check your score and learn from feedback
Complete all six questions, then choose Check my score. Read the explanation for each answer, including answers you got right. If you make a mistake, find the relevant words in the text before choosing Try again. This Entry 1 reading practice is for learning; the score is not an official exam result. Work at your own pace and ask your tutor about anything that is unclear.
Use the activities for homework
Tutors can open an activity and choose Copy activity link. Share that link in Google Classroom or a message to send learners straight to the correct reading. No account is needed. Learners can note their score and one thing they learned, then discuss their progress in the next lesson.
