L1 speaking and listening practice
Use the videos above to observe how learners take part in a formal discussion. Notice how they introduce ideas, respond to other speakers, ask relevant questions and give reasons or evidence. Watch each video once for general understanding, then replay short sections and write down useful phrases for agreeing, disagreeing and inviting others to contribute.
Prepare for the L1 speaking and listening assessment
Before a discussion, research the topic and prepare several clear points with examples. During the task, speak clearly, listen carefully and respond to what others actually say. Avoid reading a complete script. Short notes are more useful because they help you sound natural and maintain eye contact. Aim to contribute more than once without interrupting.
Strengthen L1 speaking and listening skills
Practise with a partner or small group. Take turns leading a discussion, summarising another person’s view and asking follow-up questions. Record a short practice if possible, then check your pace, volume and clarity. Good communication includes respectful body language, active listening and showing that you understand different viewpoints.
Assessment preparation checklist
Check that you can present information in a logical order, adapt your language to the audience and explain your opinions fully. You should also be able to identify the main points in other people’s contributions, make relevant comments and help the discussion move forward. In a presentation, use a clear opening, organised main points and a brief conclusion. Practise answering unexpected questions calmly and accurately.
