1. What is Future Perfect?
Make the future perfect with will + have + the past participle. It looks back from a future point to an action that will be completed before or by that point. It can also describe how long a situation will have continued by then.
Completion by a deadline
“I will have finished the report by Friday.” It will be complete no later than Friday.
Before another future event
“She will have left by the time we arrive tomorrow.”
Duration up to a future point
“By next September, we will have lived here for five years.”
2. Choose the correct form
| Subject | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Every subject | will have + past participle | I will have finished. She will have finished. They will have finished. |
3. Positive, negative and question patterns
+ Positive
Subject + will + have + past participle
She will have finished by Friday.
− Negative
Subject + will not + have + past participle
She won’t have finished by Friday.
? Question
Will + subject + have + past participle?
Will she have finished by Friday?
Use have after will with every subject, including he and she. Keep the past participle. Put not after will. Move will before the subject for a question; keep have + past participle after it.
4. Contractions
I will have → I’ll have
She will have → She’ll have
They will have → They’ll have
will not have → won’t have
“He won’t have finished” means “He will not have finished”.
5. Questions and short answers
Yes/No questions
“Will you have finished?” → “Yes, I will.” / “No, I won’t.”
“Will she have sent it?” → “Yes, she will.” / “No, she won’t.”
“Will they have moved?” → “Yes, they will.” / “No, they won’t.”
Repeat will in the short answer, not have.
WH-questions
- What will you have completed by Friday?
- How many lessons will they have finished by June?
- How long will she have worked here by next month?
- Who will you have met by the end of the course?
6. Spelling and verb forms
Regular participles
finish → finished; work → worked; complete → completed.
Irregular participles
go → gone; see → seen; write → written; eat → eaten; take → taken; do → done.
Use have, not has
She will have finished, not she will has finished.
Some keep the same spelling
put → put; cut → cut; read → read. The participle read sounds like red.
7. Time expressions and common mistakes
By Friday · by tomorrow evening · by the end of next month · by the time… · before…
What does by mean?
“By Friday” means no later than Friday; the action may finish earlier. “I’ll have sent it by five” tells you it will be complete at or before five.
Future time clauses
“She will have left by the time he arrives tomorrow.” Use a present form in this future time clause, not “by the time he will arrive”. The main clause carries will have.
Continuous or perfect?
“At six, I will be cooking” focuses on an activity in progress. “By six, I will have cooked dinner” focuses on completion. The choice depends on what you want to say, not just on a time word.
Duration
“By next May, she will have worked here for ten years.” For gives the length of the situation up to that future point.
- “I will have finish.” → I will have finished.
- “She will has left.” → She will have left.
- “They will have went.” → They will have gone.
- “Will he have ate?” → Will he have eaten?
- “When they will have finished?” → When will they have finished?
