1. What is Future Continuous?
Make the future continuous with will + be + verb-ing. It focuses on an activity that will be in progress at a particular future time. Will be has the same form with every subject.
In progress at a future time
“At eight tomorrow morning, I will be travelling to work.”
An activity during a future period
“We will be working on the project all morning tomorrow.”
Asking about an expected plan
“Will you be using the printer this afternoon?” This can be a neutral question about someone’s expected activity.
2. Choose the correct form
| Subject | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Every subject | will be + verb-ing | I will be working. She will be working. They will be working. |
3. Positive, negative and question patterns
+ Positive
Subject + will + be + verb-ing
She will be working at nine tomorrow.
− Negative
Subject + will not + be + verb-ing
She won’t be working at nine tomorrow.
? Question
Will + subject + be + verb-ing?
Will she be working at nine tomorrow?
Use be after will with every subject. Use the -ing form after be. Put not after will. Move will before the subject for a question; keep be + verb-ing after the subject.
4. Contractions
I will be → I’ll be
She will be → She’ll be
They will be → They’ll be
will not be → won’t be
“We won’t be driving” means “We will not be driving”.
5. Questions and short answers
Yes/No questions
“Will you be working?” → “Yes, I will.” / “No, I won’t.”
“Will she be travelling?” → “Yes, she will.” / “No, she won’t.”
“Will they be studying?” → “Yes, they will.” / “No, they won’t.”
WH-questions
- What will you be doing at this time tomorrow?
- Where will she be working next week?
- Who will they be meeting tomorrow afternoon?
- Why will he be travelling at night?
6. Spelling and verb forms
Keep will be
Do not use will am, will is or will are.
Use -ing
work → working; study → studying; take → taking; write → writing.
Double some final consonants
run → running; sit → sitting; stop → stopping.
British spelling
travel → travelling; practise → practising. Keep y in flying and studying.
7. Time expressions and common mistakes
At this time tomorrow · at eight tomorrow · this time next week · all morning tomorrow
Activity in progress or a future decision?
“I’ll answer the phone” can be a decision made now. “At ten tomorrow, I’ll be attending an interview” focuses on the activity that will be in progress then.
A future point inside an activity
“At six tomorrow, she will be cooking dinner.” The sentence focuses on cooking at six. It does not say the meal will be finished by six.
“She will have cooked dinner by six” has a different focus: completion by that future point. That is the future perfect.
- “I will working.” → I will be working.
- “She will is studying.” → She will be studying.
- “They will be travel.” → They will be travelling.
- “Will he be drive?” → Will he be driving?
- “Where they will be staying?” → Where will they be staying?
