1. What is Present Continuous for Future Arrangements?
The present continuous can refer to the future when a plan is already arranged. It often involves a booking, an appointment, an agreement with another person, or a clear time and place. Use am/is/are + verb-ing with a future context.
Appointments
“I’m seeing the dentist at ten tomorrow.” The appointment is booked.
Plans agreed with people
“We’re having dinner with our neighbours on Saturday.” We have agreed the plan.
Booked travel and organised events
“She’s flying to Glasgow on Monday.” Her flight is booked.
2. Choose the correct form
| Subject | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I | am + verb-ing | I am meeting my tutor tomorrow. |
| He / She / It / one person | is + verb-ing | She is seeing the dentist on Friday. |
| You / We / They / plural subjects | are + verb-ing | They are moving next Saturday. |
3. Positive, negative and question patterns
+ Positive
Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing + future context
She is seeing the dentist tomorrow.
− Negative
Subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing + future context
She isn’t seeing the dentist tomorrow.
? Question
Am/Is/Are + subject + verb-ing + future context?
Is she seeing the dentist tomorrow?
The structure is the same as the present continuous for now. The future time and the arrangement make the meaning different. Do not add will to this pattern: “I’m meeting her tomorrow”, not “I will am meeting her tomorrow”.
4. Contractions
I am meeting → I’m meeting
She is seeing → She’s seeing
We are travelling → We’re travelling
is not flying → isn’t flying
are not moving → aren’t moving
“They’re not moving” and “They aren’t moving” are both correct.
5. Questions and short answers
Yes/No questions
“Are you meeting her tomorrow?” → “Yes, I am.” / “No, I’m not.”
“Is he flying on Monday?” → “Yes, he is.” / “No, he isn’t.”
“Are they visiting on Sunday?” → “Yes, they are.” / “No, they aren’t.”
WH-questions
- Who are you meeting tomorrow?
- What time is she leaving on Friday?

6. Spelling and verb forms
Add -ing
meet → meeting; visit → visiting; start → starting.
Usually drop a final silent e
take → taking; have → having; move → moving.
Double some final consonants
sit → sitting; run → running; get → getting.
Keep y and use British spelling
fly → flying; study → studying; travel → travelling.
7. Time expressions and common mistakes
Tomorrow · tonight · on Friday · next week · next weekend · at three tomorrow
Now or the future?
“I’m meeting my tutor now” describes the present activity. “I’m meeting my tutor tomorrow” describes the arranged future plan. Context tells you which meaning is intended.
Arrangement, intention or timetable?
“I’m going to study next term” presents an intention. “I’m meeting the course adviser at two on Tuesday” presents an arrangement. The distinction is about meaning; in some situations both future forms are possible.
Timetables commonly use the present simple: “The train leaves at nine tomorrow.” A personal arrangement can use the present continuous: “We are taking the nine o’clock train.”
Do not use this form just because something is in the future. A prediction about the weather usually uses another future form: “It’s going to rain tomorrow” or “It will rain tomorrow”.
- “I meeting her tomorrow.” → I am meeting her tomorrow.
- “She are flying on Monday.” → She is flying on Monday.
- “They are move next week.” → They are moving next week.
- “Do you are seeing her tomorrow?” → Are you seeing her tomorrow?
- “When you are leaving?” → When are you leaving?
