The present continuous can refer to the future when a plan is already arranged. It often involves a booking, an appointment, an agreement with another person, or a clear time and place. Use am/is/are + verb-ing with a future context.

Plans agreed with people

“We’re having dinner with our neighbours on Saturday.” We have agreed the plan.

Booked travel and organised events

Now or the future?

“I’m meeting my tutor now” describes the present activity. “I’m meeting my tutor tomorrow” describes the arranged future plan. Context tells you which meaning is intended.

Arrangement, intention or timetable?

“I’m going to study next term” presents an intention. “I’m meeting the course adviser at two on Tuesday” presents an arrangement. The distinction is about meaning; in some situations both future forms are possible.

Timetables commonly use the present simple: “The train leaves at nine tomorrow.” A personal arrangement can use the present continuous: “We are taking the nine o’clock train.”

Do not use this form just because something is in the future. A prediction about the weather usually uses another future form: “It’s going to rain tomorrow” or “It will rain tomorrow”.

  • “I meeting her tomorrow.” → I am meeting her tomorrow.
  • “She are flying on Monday.” → She is flying on Monday.
  • “They are move next week.” → They are moving next week.
  • “Do you are seeing her tomorrow?” → Are you seeing her tomorrow?
  • “When you are leaving?” → When are you leaving?
