1. What is Will?
Use will + the base verb for predictions, promises, offers and many decisions made at the moment of speaking. Will has the same form with every subject.
A decision made now
“The phone is ringing. I’ll answer it.” I decide as I speak.
Offers and promises
“I’ll carry that bag for you.” “I won’t tell anyone.”
Predictions and future facts
“I think you’ll enjoy the course.” “My son will be six next month.”
2. Choose the correct form
| Subject | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I / You / He / She / It / We / They | will + base verb | I will help. She will help. They will help. |
| Every subject: negative | will not + base verb | She will not drive. |
| Every subject: question | Will + subject + base verb? | Will they arrive soon? |
3. Positive, negative and question patterns
+ Positive
Subject + will + base verb
She will call tomorrow.
− Negative
Subject + will not + base verb
She won’t call tomorrow.
? Question
Will + subject + base verb?
Will she call tomorrow?
Use the base verb after will. Do not add -s for he or she. Do not add to, -ed or -ing. “She will call”, not “She wills call”, “She will to call” or “She will calling”. For the verb be, use will be: “He will be tired”.
4. Contractions
I will → I’ll
You will → You’ll
He will → He’ll
She will → She’ll
It will → It’ll
We will → We’ll
They will → They’ll
Will not → won’t. Do not write willn’t.
5. Questions and short answers
Yes/No questions
“Will you help me?” → “Yes, I will.” / “No, I won’t.”
“Will she call?” → “Yes, she will.” / “No, she won’t.”
“Will they arrive soon?” → “Yes, they will.” / “No, they won’t.”
Use the full form in positive short answers: “Yes, I will”, not “Yes, I’ll”.
WH-questions
- When will the course start?
- What will you do next?
- Where will they meet us?
- How will she travel tomorrow?
6. Spelling and verb forms
Will never changes with the subject
I will, you will, he will, she will, we will, they will. There is no wills.
Keep the base verb
go, help, study, have, be. Do not use went, helps, studying or is after will.
Won’t is the negative contraction
Will not and won’t have the same meaning. Keep the apostrophe.
Use ’ll in statements
“I’ll call you.” “They’ll help.” Do not use ’ll at the end of a positive short answer.
7. Time expressions and common mistakes
Tomorrow · later · soon · tonight · next week · in the future
Offers and requests
“I’ll open the door for you” is an offer. “Will you help me, please?” can be a request. Adding please makes the request more polite.
Will or Going to?
Use context to choose: “I’ll make some tea” may be a decision now. “I’m going to study next term” presents an intention already decided.
Both forms can express predictions, and their use can overlap. Will is common with opinions such as “I think she’ll pass”. Going to is common when there is present evidence, such as dark clouds.
Will is one future form; we do not use it automatically for every future situation. Timetables and arrangements can use other forms.
- “She wills call.” → She will call.
- “I will to help.” → I will help.
- “He won’t goes.” → He won’t go.
- “Will she brings it?” → Will she bring it?
- “When they will arrive?” → When will they arrive?
