Pre-Entry Reading and Writing
Your Reading and Writing Journey Starts Here
Free reading and writing resources for beginners
These free reading and writing activities help adult ESOL Pre-Entry beginners recognise common words, understand short texts and practise everyday English. For example, learners can begin with the Top 100 words, then choose a reading level or a familiar topic such as family, shopping, health, transport and work. In addition, each resource uses clear language and practical situations that support English for life in the UK.
Every topic includes a printable PDF and a matching audio recording. First, open the PDF to read the text, look at the pictures and complete the activity. Next, play the audio on this page to hear the words and sentences. Afterwards, listen more than once, follow the text with your finger and repeat key phrases aloud. As a result, this simple routine develops reading, pronunciation, listening and speaking together.
How to use these beginner English activities
A simple practice routine
- First, choose one familiar topic.
- Next, look carefully at the picture.
- Then, read the topic title aloud.
- After that, open the matching PDF.
- For example, circle any words you already know.
- In addition, underline one or two new words.
- Meanwhile, play the audio and follow the text.
- As a result, you can check your pronunciation.
- Finally, write one short sentence in a notebook.
- Therefore, return later and repeat the activity.
- However, move to a harder level only when you feel ready.
Start with one short topic and work at a comfortable pace. First, read the title and identify any words you already know. Next, open the PDF and try the activity. After that, use the audio to check the words and practise saying them clearly. Finally, write a few useful words or one simple sentence in a notebook. Therefore, regular short practice will help learners remember more than completing many activities at once.
Tips for teachers and helpers
First of all, model one activity for the learner. Next, read the title together. Then, ask the learner to predict the topic. For example, point to a picture and name it. In addition, pause the audio after each sentence. However, give the learner enough time to respond. Therefore, repeat difficult words slowly and clearly. Finally, praise effort and progress. Moreover, learners can repeat any topic. In contrast, harder tasks can wait. Consequently, practice remains calm and positive. Overall, small steps build confidence.
The PDFs open in a separate tab so learners can keep this page available for the audio. In addition, teachers, volunteers and family members can use the resources for guided practice. However, choose the easiest level first and move forward only when the learner feels confident. For additional video practice, visit the ESOLish YouTube channel.
